"Top Small Firm Project Award for Engineering Excellence"
Grand Opening Celebration with the Summer Star owner and design and construction team.
Outback Engineering was awarded the 2015 "Top Small Firm Project Award for Engineering Excellence" by the American Council of Engineering Companies of MA for site design on the Summer Star Wildlife Sanctuary.
Located in Boylston, MA, Summer Star Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the sustainably–designed Trailhead House and nature trails that traverse the site’s 45-acre protected forested terrain that adjoins other conservation land. Completed in September 2014, Outback Engineering was responsible for surveying, site design, permitting, and construction support. Working closely with the client and project team, Outback implemented many low-impact, sustainable techniques, such that the project received LEED Gold Certification. Since Outback received its award in front of a packed audience at the ACEC Awards night in March 2015, the Summer Star project and its design and construction team have received other awards.
The Trailhead House has been open since September 2014 and provides educational programs for visiting school children
and is also open to the public. Innovative site design includes the use of a septic system with composting toilets and drip-dispersal leaching system; drainage system with rain gardens, permeable pavement and other groundwater recharge techniques; rainwater from the roof is harvested for re-use in underground fire protection and irrigation tanks; and the building has an earth roof and solar panels among other energy-efficient innovations.
